The Holy Spirit

Who Is the Holy Spirit? The Spirit of the One True God

There is one God. Deuteronomy 6:4 declares, 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.' The Holy Spirit is not a separate person — He is the Spirit of the one true God. The same God who was Father in creation, Son in redemption, and Holy Spirit in the church is one God, not three. 'Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh' (1 Timothy 3:16).

The Holy Spirit is God Himself — His presence, His power, His breath. He is not an 'it' or an abstract force, but neither is He a third person distinct from the Father and the Son. He is the Spirit of the one God who created the heavens and the earth, who robed Himself in flesh and walked among us as Jesus Christ, and who now dwells within His church by His Spirit.

The Holy Spirit Is the Spirit of God

Throughout Scripture, the Holy Spirit is identified as the Spirit of God — not a separate being, but God's own Spirit at work. Understanding this reveals the beauty of God's plan: one God, expressing Himself and operating in different ways to bring salvation to humanity.

He Created

Genesis 1:2 — 'The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.' The Holy Spirit was active in creation — the Spirit of the one God bringing all things into existence.

He Inspired Scripture

2 Peter 1:21 — 'Prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.' The Spirit of God spoke through the prophets and apostles.

He Dwells in Believers

1 Corinthians 3:16 — 'Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst?' God Himself lives inside His people by His Spirit.

He Empowers

Acts 1:8 — 'But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses.' The Spirit of God equips believers for ministry and boldness.

He Intercedes

Romans 8:26 — 'In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.'

He Is God

Acts 5:3-4 — Peter said, 'You have lied to the Holy Spirit... you have not lied just to human beings but to God.' Lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God — because the Holy Spirit is God's own Spirit.

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — One God

The Bible reveals one God who manifests Himself in different ways. He was Father in creation — the one God who made all things. He was Son in redemption — the same God who robed Himself in flesh, was born of a virgin, and shed His blood on the cross for our sins. And He is Holy Spirit in the church — the same God who now dwells within and among His people.

Colossians 2:9 says, 'For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.' Jesus was not one-third of God — He was the fullness of God in a human body. When we receive the Holy Spirit, we receive the Spirit of that same God. There are not three who share glory — there is one God, and His name is Jesus. 'Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved' (Acts 4:12).

What the Holy Spirit Does

The Holy Spirit is active in the world and in the lives of believers. Here are His primary roles according to Scripture:

He Convicts

John 16:8 — 'When He comes, He will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment.' The Spirit of God convicts people of sin and draws them to Jesus.

He Regenerates

Titus 3:5 — 'He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy, through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.' The Spirit gives new life.

He Indwells

1 Corinthians 3:16 — 'Do you not know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst?' God's Spirit lives inside every Spirit-filled believer.

He Empowers

Acts 1:8 — 'But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses.' The Spirit equips believers for ministry and service.

He Guides

John 16:13 — 'But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth.' The Holy Spirit leads believers in God's will.

He Transforms

2 Corinthians 3:18 — 'And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.'

The Fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23 describes the evidence of the Holy Spirit's work in a believer's life: 'But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.' These are not qualities we produce through self-effort — they are the natural fruit of a life surrendered to the Spirit of God. As we walk with Him, He produces His character in us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the one true God. In Acts 5:3-4, Peter said that lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God — because the Holy Spirit is God's own Spirit. There is one God (Deuteronomy 6:4), and His Spirit is not a separate person but God Himself at work. The Holy Spirit possesses attributes that belong to God alone: He is eternal (Hebrews 9:14), omnipresent (Psalm 139:7-10), all-knowing (1 Corinthians 2:10-11), and the Creator (Genesis 1:2, Job 33:4). The Holy Spirit is not a lesser being — He is God.

No. The Bible teaches that there is one God (Deuteronomy 6:4). The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not three separate persons — they are manifestations of the one true God. He was Father in creation, Son in redemption, and Holy Spirit in the church. Colossians 2:9 says, 'In Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.' Jesus was not one person of three — He was the fullness of God in a human body. The Holy Spirit is that same God's Spirit now dwelling in His people.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the infilling of God's Spirit in a believer's life — the gift promised in Acts 2:38. On the day of Pentecost, the 120 in the upper room 'were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them' (Acts 2:4). This was not a one-time event — it happened at Samaria (Acts 8), at Cornelius' house (Acts 10:45-46), and in Ephesus (Acts 19:6). The baptism of the Holy Spirit is accompanied by the initial evidence of speaking in tongues, and it empowers believers for bold witness and holy living.

Acts 2:38 gives the apostolic answer: 'Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.' To receive the Holy Spirit: (1) Repent of your sins; (2) Be baptized by immersion in the name of Jesus Christ; (3) Ask God to fill you with His Spirit (Luke 11:13 — 'How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!'). The biblical evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4, Acts 10:46, Acts 19:6).

The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to believers for the building up of the church. 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 lists gifts including wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, discernment of spirits, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues. Romans 12:6-8 adds serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, and showing mercy. Ephesians 4:11 lists apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. Every believer has at least one gift (1 Peter 4:10), given by the Spirit for the common good.

There is one God, and His name is Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of that one God — the same God who was manifest in flesh as Jesus Christ. Jesus said, 'The Father is in Me' (John 14:11) and 'I and the Father are one' (John 10:30). Before His ascension, Jesus told His disciples, 'I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever — the Spirit of truth' (John 14:16). The Holy Spirit is Jesus coming to dwell in and among His people by His Spirit — not a different person, but the same God present in a new and powerful way.
