Spiritual Warfare

Armor of God

The armor of God is one of the most powerful teachings in the Bible on spiritual warfare. Found in Ephesians 6:10-18, the apostle Paul describes six pieces of spiritual armor that God has provided for every believer to stand firm against the attacks of the enemy. This armor is not physical — it is spiritual. And it is not optional — it is essential.

Paul begins with a clear command: 'Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes' (Ephesians 6:10-11). The battle we face is not against people — 'For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms' (Ephesians 6:12).

The Six Pieces of the Armor of God

Each piece of God's armor corresponds to a specific spiritual reality. Understanding what each piece represents helps you put on the full armor and stand firm in battle.

1. Belt of Truth

'Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist' (Ephesians 6:14). The belt held the soldier's armor together. Truth — knowing and living God's truth — holds everything else in place. The enemy operates through lies and deception. When you know the truth and walk in it, his lies cannot take root. Jesus said, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life' (John 14:6).

2. Breastplate of Righteousness

'...with the breastplate of righteousness in place' (Ephesians 6:14). The breastplate protected the soldier's heart and vital organs. Righteousness — both Christ's righteousness imputed to us and our practical righteousness — guards our heart against accusation and condemnation. The devil is 'the accuser of our brothers and sisters' (Revelation 12:10), and the breastplate of righteousness stops his accusations.

3. Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

'...and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace' (Ephesians 6:15). A soldier needs firm footing. The gospel of peace gives us stability — we stand firm because we know we are reconciled to God through Christ. We also carry this gospel wherever we go, ready to share the hope we have.

4. Shield of Faith

'In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one' (Ephesians 6:16). The shield was the soldier's primary defense against incoming attacks. Faith — trusting God's character and promises — quenches every arrow of doubt, fear, temptation, and accusation the enemy fires. 'Above all, taking the shield of faith' means faith is critical.

5. Helmet of Salvation

'Take the helmet of salvation' (Ephesians 6:17). The helmet protects the head — the mind. The assurance of salvation guards our thoughts against despair, doubt, and deception. When you know you are saved — secure in Christ — the enemy cannot shake your identity or steal your hope. 1 Thessalonians 5:8 also calls this 'the hope of salvation as a helmet.'

6. Sword of the Spirit

'...and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God' (Ephesians 6:17). The sword is the only offensive weapon in the armor. The Word of God — the Bible — is our weapon against the enemy. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He defeated the devil by quoting Scripture: 'It is written' (Matthew 4:1-11). We do the same. Knowing God's Word is essential for spiritual warfare.

Putting On the Armor — Prayer

Paul concludes his teaching on the armor of God with a call to prayer: 'And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests' (Ephesians 6:18). The armor is not put on by physical action — it is put on through prayer and faith. Here is a prayer to help you put on the full armor of God each day:

The Prayer

'Heavenly Father, I put on the belt of truth — I choose to walk in Your truth today. I put on the breastplate of righteousness — I am covered by the righteousness of Christ. I put on the shoes of the gospel of peace — I stand firm in the peace You have given me. I take up the shield of faith — I trust Your promises, and I extinguish every arrow of the enemy. I put on the helmet of salvation — my mind is guarded by the assurance that I am saved. I take up the sword of the Spirit — Your Word is my weapon. I pray in the Spirit on all occasions. In Jesus' name, Amen.'

Frequently Asked Questions

The armor of God is the spiritual protection described by the apostle Paul in Ephesians 6:10-18. It consists of six pieces: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit (the Word of God). Paul uses the imagery of a Roman soldier's armor to illustrate the spiritual resources God has given believers to stand firm against the devil's schemes in spiritual warfare.

Putting on the armor of God is a daily spiritual practice done through prayer and faith. Each morning, you can pray through Ephesians 6:10-18, acknowledging each piece: 'Lord, I put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and I take up the sword of the Spirit, which is Your Word.' You put on the armor by living in truth, walking in righteousness, trusting God's promises, and knowing His Word. It is not a ritual — it is a lifestyle of dependence on God.

The armor of God is essential because every believer is in a spiritual battle. Ephesians 6:12 says, 'For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.' Without the armor, believers are vulnerable to the devil's attacks — deception, temptation, accusation, fear, and discouragement. The armor is God's provision for standing firm and overcoming the enemy.

The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God — the Bible. Ephesians 6:17 says, 'Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.' Unlike the other pieces of armor, which are primarily defensive, the sword is an offensive weapon. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), He used the Word of God as a sword — saying 'It is written' to counter every lie of the devil. Knowing, memorizing, and speaking Scripture is how we wield the sword of the Spirit.

Putting on the 'full' armor of God means using all six pieces — not just some. Paul emphasizes this in Ephesians 6:11: 'Put on the full armor of God.' Each piece is essential. Without truth, the lies get in. Without righteousness, the heart is exposed. Without peace, we lose our footing. Without faith, the arrows get through. Without salvation, the mind is unguarded. Without the Word, we have no offensive weapon. The full armor means complete protection — nothing missing.

Yes. The armor of God is specifically given for spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:11-12 explains that we put on the armor to 'take your stand against the devil's schemes' and that 'our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against... the spiritual forces of evil.' Spiritual warfare is real — the enemy attacks believers through temptation, deception, fear, discouragement, and accusation. The armor of God is the provision God has given us to stand firm and victorious in that battle. It is not about fighting people — it is about standing firm against spiritual forces.
