End Times
The Bible gives clear signs of the end times — not to cause fear, but to prepare God's people for the return of Jesus Christ. In Matthew 24, Jesus' disciples asked Him, 'What will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?' Jesus responded by describing specific signs that would characterize the period before His return.
It is important to understand that these signs are not given so we can set dates or live in fear. Jesus Himself said, 'But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father' (Matthew 24:36). The signs are given so that believers would be watchful, ready, and faithful. They are a call to live with urgency and purpose.
In Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21, Jesus described the signs that would precede His return. Here are the key signs He identified:
Matthew 24:4-5 — Jesus answered: Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, claiming 'I am the Messiah,' and will deceive many. Jesus warned that deception would be a hallmark of the end times, with many false teachers claiming divine authority.
Matthew 24:6-7 — 'You will hear of wars and rumors of wars... Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.' Jesus said these conflicts would come, but added, 'See to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.'
Matthew 24:7 — 'There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.' Jesus described an increase in natural disasters as birth pains — increasing in frequency and intensity as the end approaches.
Matthew 24:9 — 'Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of Me.' Jesus warned that His followers would face increasing opposition and persecution in the last days.
Matthew 24:12 — 'Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.' Jesus warned that sin and lawlessness would increase, causing many people's faith and love to diminish.
Matthew 24:14 — 'And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.' This is the one positive sign — the global spread of the Gospel is a key indicator that the end is near.
Beyond Jesus' words in Matthew 24, other passages give additional signs of the end times:
2 Peter 3:3-4 — Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, 'Where is this coming He promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.'
2 Timothy 3:1-5 — 'But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive... having a form of godliness but denying its power.' Paul describes a moral collapse in the last days.
2 Thessalonians 2:3 — 'Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed.' A widespread departure from the faith is prophesied.
Many Bible scholars see the reestablishment of Israel as a nation in 1948 as a fulfillment of end times prophecy (Ezekiel 37, Isaiah 11:11-12). The regathering of God's people is a significant sign.
Joel 2:30-31 — 'I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.'
Daniel 12:4 — 'But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.' This prophesies an explosion of knowledge and global mobility in the last days.
Jesus concluded His teaching on the end times with a call to readiness: 'Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come' (Matthew 24:42). The purpose of studying end times prophecy is not to predict dates — it is to be ready. Here is how to be ready for Christ's return:
The most important preparation is to know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Salvation through faith in Jesus is the foundation. Without Him, no amount of readiness matters.
Jesus said, 'Keep watch' (Matthew 24:42). Live each day with the awareness that Christ could return. This does not mean anxiety — it means faithful, purposeful living.
Know what the Bible says about the end times so you are not deceived by false teachers. The best protection against deception is knowing the truth.
Matthew 24:45-46 — 'Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when He returns.' Keep serving faithfully.
Jesus said, 'See to it that you are not alarmed' (Matthew 24:6). The signs are not meant to cause panic — they are meant to prepare you. God is in control, and His plans will be fulfilled.
Matthew 24:14 says the Gospel will be preached to all nations before the end comes. Be part of fulfilling that prophecy by sharing Jesus with those around you.
Jesus described the signs of the end times in Matthew 24. They include: false messiahs and false prophets (Matthew 24:4-5), wars and rumors of wars (Matthew 24:6-7), natural disasters like famines and earthquakes (Matthew 24:7), persecution of believers (Matthew 24:9), an increase in wickedness and love growing cold (Matthew 24:12), and the Gospel being preached to all nations (Matthew 24:14). Other passages add a falling away from the faith (2 Thessalonians 2:3), dangerous times with increased selfishness (2 Timothy 3:1-5), and scoffers who doubt Christ's return (2 Peter 3:3-4).
Many Bible scholars believe we are living in the last days. The Bible describes the 'last days' as the period between Christ's first and second coming (Hebrews 1:2, Acts 2:17). Since Jesus' ascension, we have been in the last days. The signs Jesus described in Matthew 24 — wars, natural disasters, false teachers, persecution, and the global spread of the Gospel — have been increasing throughout history. Rather than trying to pinpoint the exact timing, Jesus called His followers to be watchful and ready, because 'the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will' (Matthew 24:44).
Jesus' primary teaching on the end times is found in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 (often called the Olivet Discourse). He warned of false messiahs, wars, natural disasters, persecution, and an increase in wickedness. He described these signs as 'the beginning of birth pains' (Matthew 24:8) — meaning they would increase in frequency and intensity. He also said that 'this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come' (Matthew 24:14). Most importantly, He called His followers to be ready: 'Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come' (Matthew 24:42).
No one knows the exact timing of Jesus' return. Jesus Himself said, 'But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father' (Matthew 24:36). The Bible consistently teaches that the timing of Christ's return is known only to God the Father. What we do know is that Jesus will return — visibly, personally, and in glory (Acts 1:11, Matthew 24:30). Rather than speculating about dates, believers are called to live in a state of constant readiness, faithfully serving God and sharing the Gospel until He comes.
The Rapture is the belief, based primarily on 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 and 1 Corinthians 15:51-52, that Jesus will return for His church — and that believers who are alive at that time will be caught up ('raptured') to meet Him in the air. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 says, 'For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.' Believers differ on the timing of the Rapture relative to the Tribulation, but all agree that Christ will return for His people.
The Tribulation is a future period of intense suffering and divine judgment described in Revelation and other prophetic passages. It is often understood as a seven-year period (based on Daniel 9:27) preceding the return of Christ. Revelation 6-18 describes events including wars, plagues, famine, cosmic disturbances, and the rise of the Antichrist. Jesus said, 'For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now — and never to be equaled again' (Matthew 24:21). The Tribulation will culminate in the return of Jesus Christ to defeat evil and establish His kingdom.
