Prophetic Development

Prophetic Training

The prophetic gift is exactly that — a gift. You did not earn it, and you cannot manufacture it. But gifts require stewardship. The athlete who receives raw physical talent still trains every day. The musician who receives musical ability still practices for hours. The prophet who receives the prophetic gift still needs to develop it, protect it, submit it, and learn how to carry it with integrity.

1 Corinthians 14:1 says to "eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy." The word "eagerly desire" in the Greek is zealóō — it means to pursue with intensity, to zealously press after. God wants you to want this. And He wants you to grow in it.

The Foundation of Prophetic Development

Character Before Gift

God develops the character of a prophet before He develops the platform. The wilderness seasons, the delays, the humiliations — these are not punishments. They are the preparation. A person who operates in great prophetic power without corresponding character will eventually destroy themselves and those around them. God is more concerned with who you are than what you can do.

Deep Investment in the Word

The prophetic gift draws from the well of the Word. The more Scripture you have in you, the more the Holy Spirit has to work with when He speaks through you. Prophets who are weak in the Word tend to lean on impressions and feelings that can be unreliable. Prophets who are saturated in Scripture speak with precision and authority.

A Lifestyle of Prayer and Fasting

You cannot turn the prophetic on and off like a faucet. It flows from a lifestyle of communion with God. Men and women who operate powerfully in the prophetic almost universally describe a consistent life of prayer, fasting, and time in His presence as the foundation of what they carry.

Submitted to Spiritual Authority

A prophet without covering is a danger. The prophetic gift must be exercised within the context of accountability — to a local church, to spiritual fathers and mothers, to leaders who can speak correction and affirmation. Lone prophets with no accountability are one of the most dangerous things in the body of Christ.

Practice and Willingness to Be Wrong

You learn to prophesy by prophesying. You will miss sometimes. That is part of the training. What matters is that when you miss, you say so, you receive correction, and you keep going. Pride that cannot be corrected will disqualify a prophetic person faster than almost anything else.
