Hearing from God

How God Speaks

God is not silent. He has never been silent. The idea that God spoke loudly in the Old Testament and the New Testament and then went quiet for the last two thousand years is not biblical — it is a doctrine of limitation that keeps believers from the full inheritance of a living, communicating Father. Jesus said, "My sheep hear My voice." Not "heard." Not "will hear someday." Hear. Present tense.

The challenge is not that God is not speaking. The challenge is that most people have never been taught to recognize the many ways He does. God is infinitely creative, and He uses every available channel to reach His children. Here are the primary ways He speaks.

The Ways God Speaks

01

Through Scripture

The Word of God is the primary and most reliable way God speaks. When a verse seems to leap off the page, when a passage you've read a hundred times suddenly carries new weight — that is the Holy Spirit illuminating the Word for your specific situation. Never separate any other form of communication from Scripture.

02

The Still Small Voice

In 1 Kings 19, God spoke to Elijah not in the earthquake or the fire, but in a still small voice — a gentle whisper. Most believers describe God's voice as an inner impression, a thought that is clearly not their own, a sense of 'knowing' that carries weight and peace. Learning to distinguish that voice from your own thoughts is one of the most important spiritual skills you can develop.

03

Dreams and Visions

Joel 2 prophesies that in the last days, sons and daughters would prophesy, old men would dream dreams, and young men would see visions. God still speaks through the language of the night. Not every dream is from God — but some are unmistakably so. Dreams from God tend to be vivid, memorable, and carry a sense of meaning and urgency.

04

Through Other Believers

God uses prophetically gifted men and women to speak His heart to others. This is the gift of prophecy functioning within the body of Christ. When a word is genuinely from God, it will confirm something He has already been saying to you in private — it will not feel random. It will feel like recognition.

05

Circumstances and Open Doors

God orchestrates events. Not everything that happens is from Him, but He is sovereign enough to use circumstances — open doors, closed doors, unexpected meetings, timing that only He could have arranged — to speak direction into your life. Pay attention to the pattern, not just the individual events.

06

Peace

Colossians 3:15 says to let the peace of God rule in your heart. Peace is not just a feeling — it is a spiritual signal. When you are in God's will, there is a peace that does not make natural sense. When you are moving away from His plan, there is an unsettledness that does not go away no matter how much logic you apply. Learn to follow the peace.
