In a world filled with endless celebrations and cultural traditions, many believers find themselves asking how to align their hearts with God when it comes to observing holidays. As we seek to live lives that are pleasing to the Lord, we must look to His Word to understand our position in His grace and our responsibility to walk in the spirit of truth.
At Sheldon Maddix Ministries, we believe that every day is a gift from the Father, and our focus should always remain firmly fixed on the finished work of Jesus Christ, regardless of the calendar date.
The Heart of the Believer in Every Season
When considering the various holidays observed by society, it is essential to remember that the life of a Christian is not defined by days, months, or years, but by the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. We are called to live in a state of constant worship, where our daily habits and seasonal celebrations are filtered through the lens of scripture.
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. (Colossians 2:16-17)
This verse reminds us that the traditions of men are merely shadows, while the substance of our faith is found in Jesus alone. We do not place our salvation in the keeping of days, but we find our true peace in the Savior who governs every moment of our existence.
Living Above the Traditions of Men
While many holidays have deep historical or cultural roots, the believer must always remain discerning. We are instructed by the Apostle Paul to ensure that our hearts remain anchored in Christ rather than becoming entangled in the traditions that do not edify the body of Christ or glorify the Father.
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. (Colossians 2:8)
Our mandate is to walk in the light of the Gospel. If a celebration encourages family togetherness, gratitude, or reflection on God’s goodness, we can participate with a clean heart; however, we must always guard our minds against any form of vanity that distracts from our devotion to the Lord.
The Sanctification of Our Daily Walk
Whether we are observing a specific day or simply going about our daily business, the goal of the Christian is to be salt and light. The Bible teaches that our holiness is not a seasonal event but a constant state of being. Every day provides an opportunity to manifest the character of Christ to a lost and hurting world.
One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. (Romans 14:5)
We are encouraged to be fully persuaded in our own convictions. If you feel led by the Spirit to honor a specific day through prayer and thanksgiving, do it unto the Lord. If you feel led to maintain a simple, routine focus, do that also unto the Lord. The key is the motive of the heart.
The True Purpose of Our Celebrations
We must ask ourselves: does this day draw me closer to Jesus? Does it provide an opportunity to share the hope of the Gospel with my neighbor? Our gatherings should always be marked by the love of God, the wisdom of His Word, and a commitment to unity within the fellowship of believers.
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Matthew 18:20)
When we gather—whether for a holiday or a regular midweek service—our primary purpose is to invite the presence of the Lord. When He is in our midst, everything changes, and our traditions are transformed into vessels of grace and testimony.
Walking in Wisdom and Grace
As we navigate the complexities of our culture, let us pray for the spirit of discernment. The Lord is eager to give us wisdom as we discern which practices are beneficial and which are merely distractions. Above all, let us be known for our love and our unwavering dedication to the King of Kings.
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. (James 1:5)
We invite you to remain steadfast in your faith, knowing that the God who sustained the prophets of old is the same God who sustains you today. Keep your eyes on the cross, your heart in the Word, and your feet on the path of righteousness.
