Bible Verses About Fear
The Bible addresses fear more than almost any other topic, with 'fear not' appearing hundreds of times. God knows that fear is a universal human experience, and He offers His presence, His power, and His promises as the antidote. Scripture distinguishes between reverential fear of the Lord (a holy awe and respect) and debilitating fear (anxiety and dread that paralyzes). God calls us to the former and frees us from the latter.
2 Timothy 1:7 declares, 'For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.' Fear does not come from God. What comes from God is power to overcome, love that casts out fear, and a sound mind that thinks clearly under pressure. When fear rises, we can replace it with God's truth.
If you are battling fear — whether of the future, of failure, of loss, of death, or of the unknown — these verses are weapons for the fight. God is with you, and He has not left you to face your fears alone.
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."
— 2 Timothy 1:7
"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
— Isaiah 41:10
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."
— Psalm 23:4
"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love."
— 1 John 4:18
"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."
— Joshua 1:9
"The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"
— Psalm 27:1
Fear is overcome not by trying harder not to be afraid, but by replacing it with something stronger: the truth of God's Word and the reality of His presence. 1 John 4:18 says, 'perfect love casteth out fear.' When you meditate on God's love for you and His promises to you, fear loses its grip. The more you know you are loved by an all-powerful God, the less power fear has over you.
When fear strikes, speak God's Word over your situation. Remind yourself of Isaiah 41:10: God is with you, He is your God, He will strengthen you, He will help you, and He will uphold you. You are not alone, and you are not defenseless. The Lord is your light and your salvation — whom shall you fear?
Isaiah 41:10 is one of the most powerful: 'Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee.' 2 Timothy 1:7 is also key: 'God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.'
The phrase 'fear not' (and variations like 'do not be afraid') appears approximately 365 times in the Bible — enough for every day of the year. This reflects God's heart to continually reassure His people of His presence and protection.
Philippians 4:6-7 says to bring every concern to God in prayer, and His peace will guard your heart. 1 Peter 5:7 says to cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you. Fear and anxiety are replaced by God's peace through prayer and trust.
1 John 4:18 says, 'There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear.' When you deeply experience God's love, fear loses its power. The more you know you are loved and held by God, the less room fear has in your heart.
