Fasting Guide

The 3-Day Fast

Three days is one of the most significant periods of fasting in Scripture. Esther fasted three days before approaching the king to save her people. Saul of Tarsus, after his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus, fasted three days without food or water before Ananias came to restore his sight. There is something about three days that represents a complete consecration — a total yielding of yourself to God.

A three-day fast is not a small thing. It takes preparation, intention, and discipline. But when you come through it, you will have broken something in the spiritual atmosphere around your life. You will hear more clearly. You will feel lighter. And God will honor what you sacrificed to seek His face.

How to Prepare

01

Begin reducing portion sizes 2–3 days before you start. Your body will adjust more smoothly if you taper rather than stop eating abruptly.

02

Set a clear purpose for your fast. Write it down. What are you believing God for? What do you need to hear? What do you need Him to move on?

03

Clear your schedule as much as possible. Protect the first and last hours of each day for prayer and the Word.

04

Tell the right people. Not for show, but so that someone is praying with you and can check on you.

Day by Day

Day One

Consecration

The first day is usually the hardest physically. Your body is resisting. Your head may ache. You will be tempted to quit. Push through. Use this day to confess, to lay everything before God, and to ask Him to cleanse you. Pray Psalm 51. Surrender what you have been holding on to.

Day Two

Seeking

By the second day, your body has adjusted. Your spirit begins to rise. This is the day to press into prayer. Use this day to seek specific direction. Listen more than you speak. Journal what God shows you. Read the Word slowly and deliberately.

Day Three

Breakthrough

The third day carries a weight of expectation. This is the day of resurrection. Pray with boldness and authority. Declare what you are standing for. Thank God in advance for what He is doing. Enter your answer before you see it.

Breaking Your Fast

Breaking a three-day fast requires care. Start with small amounts of juice or broth, then soft fruits and vegetables. Do not jump straight back into heavy meals. Give your body at least a day to transition. This is also a sacred moment — thank God before you eat. Acknowledge what He has done.
